communications between ambassador stevens and the state department. >> at a time most americans would want to rally around our country at the death of four americans serving our country instead we've had this bizarre response which only leads me to believe, number one, there was gross negligence or incompetence involved or this administration doesn't want all of us to realize that libya may now be a failed state if the fbi agents who are well-trained can't even make it into benghazi. >> with growing calls for ambassador susan rice resign over her comments that benghazi was a demonstration spun out of control had strong defense this weekend by senior obama cam main advisor. >> i was shocked to see representative king attack ambassador rice because she was acting on the intelligence given her to the intelligence community. to say she should resign, she is one of the most remarkable splendid public servants that is thoroughly irresponsible. >> reporter: two final observations about axelrod's comments. number one, susan rice went way beyond the assessment here given by the director of national

or the leaked video or stuart stevens or the improving economy or media bias or distorted polls or the message or mormonism, it's mitt." what does mitt romney have to do in this first debate to change the narrative that he is, in fact, a flawed candidate? >> i think it's sort of stating the obvious. in every campaign where there are problems, be it staff problems, be it message problems, there's always a lot of criticism that goes around it. ultimately, the candidate is responsible and it all comes from the top. so i think to conclude that mitt romney is responsible for whatever problems he had is probably an easy conclusion to have to make. obviously, in the debates, he's going to have to perform well, he's going to have to perform succinctly, and we've seen him do that in the past, as you have been discussing. he has been able to go on -- all throughout the republican primaries, he was able to at moments when expectations for him were extremely low, go in and surpass them. and if he keeps his cool and he knows his stuff, i think he'll probably be able to do that on wednesday. >> who has the

chris stevens. frankly, i don't see this as a huge red flag because a dc3 there i don't think in any way would have prevented these four murders. but your thoughts? >> i agree with that, as far as a dc3. but in light of all the other facts that are coming to light now, you had multiple attacks, even the british closed their consulate. you had the red cross, the international red cross was there. they had an rpg, you know, hit at their facility. so there were multiple, multiple attacks, i think more than 12 or 13, that definitely said they needed security. they requested security more than one time. so i don't know how leading up to 9/11, our administration -- our state department didn't take the appropriated steps to make sure that american citizens abroad were secure. that's the number-1 job of the federal government, to keep the citizens secure, whether here in the continental united states or overseas. >> ambassador rice has written a letter that says network part, this is a response to u.s. senators who want to know why she went on tv right afterwards and said it was the video. she s
